Oscars Gift Bag Includes $275 Toilet Paper—And Hey, That’s What It Costs To Feed A Family

Regardless of whether they win an award, Oscar nominees will be going home with an extravagant Oscar gift bag this year that includes a $275 roll of toilet paper—and, hey, that’s about what it costs to feed a family for a week.

Distinctive Assets, the company in charge of organizing the Oscar gift bag, put together a record-setting package this year that’s valued at $200,000 and will be an extra perk for award winners. As for the night’s losers, at least they can go home knowing the care package they received simply for showing up costs about as much as a moderately sized home for a lower-middle-class family. Maybe they can even dry their tears with the $275 roll of Joseph’s Toiletries toilet paper that, if converted into its cash value, could provide enough groceries to feed a family of five for a week.

Also included in the gift bag is $300 worth of personalized M&Ms, a $250 vaporizer, and $45,000 worth of Audi rentals from Silvercar, which is well over the average cost of a new car. And for the celebs who just want to get away for a while, there’s a $55,000 10-day first-class trip to Israel and a $45,000 15-day walking tour of Japan that, when combined, are worth more than the average American family’s annual household income.

But then, who can put a price on getting away from the workaday pressures of being a movie star for a little while?

Maybe the most bizarre item in the extravagant package is the $1,900 “Vampire Breast Lift,” a variation on the controversial “Vampire Face Lift” that uses a person’s own blood to rejuvenate the skin. Most likely, the majority of this year’s nominees won’t even end up using this item, so it’s really just a small, token gesture from the Academy that costs about as much as nine months of health insurance premiums for a bronze-rated PPO that will barely cover you if you’re in a car accident.

So, as this year’s nominees prepare to face the music at the Oscars this month, they can at least take comfort in the fact that, win or lose, the Academy is willing to hand them nearly a quarter-million dollars’ worth of goods just for being present at a party thrown in their honor. That should make these celebrities feel special, however briefly.
